Shipbuilding

Industry Background

Shipbuilding involves a large number of steel structures, aluminum alloy superstructures, copper alloy propellers, various valves and piping systems. The whole construction period from section fabrication, outfitting to sea trial and delivery lasts one to two years. Marine metal components are exposed to seawater spray, salt spray and humid air throughout the process, so corrosion runs through the entire construction and storage stage.

Industry Challenges

1.Temporary rusting during hull section fabrication

The interval from cutting to assembly of hull sections often lasts weeks or even months. Exposed steel structures in open yards quickly develop surface rust before painting, increasing workload of subsequent sandblasting and coating.

2.Rusting inside enclosed cabin spaces

Poor ventilation inside enclosed cabins, empty tanks and pipeline inner cavities leads to high humidity and large-area rust. Subsequent treatment requires operation in confined spaces with high construction difficulty and cost.

3.Galvanic corrosion of multiple metals

Direct contact between aluminum alloy superstructures and steel hulls, as well as copper propellers and stern shaft sealing areas forms galvanic pairs. Corrosion of low-potential metals is accelerated in seawater and humid environments.

4.Rusting of outfitting parts during long-term storage

Purchased valves, pipe fittings, deck machinery and other outfitting parts may be stored for months before installation. Temperature and humidity fluctuations during warehousing cause rust.

5.Corrosion in welding heat-affected zones

Shipbuilding involves a huge amount of welding. Material performance changes in welding heat-affected zones, which are prone to priority corrosion in humid environments and hard to clean thoroughly before painting.

VCI Solution Value Proposition

We provide comprehensive protection solutions covering cabin interior and exterior, compatible with multiple metals and easy for construction, meeting full-cycle anti-rust demands during ship fabrication, outfitting and storage. Our VCIACS Rust Converter realizes integrated derusting and anti-rust treatment without grinding.

Recommended Solutions & Product Features

  • VCI Anti-Rust Film / Bag: Cover key machined surfaces of hull sections to prevent surface rust during open storage.

  • VCI Anti-Rust Paper / Cloth: Laid between stacked outfitting parts and steel plates, compatible with multiple metals.

  • VCI Anti-Rust Powder / Emitter: Placed inside enclosed cabins, empty tanks or pipeline cavities. Vapor molecules diffuse to cover all inner surfaces, eliminating the need for manual operation in confined spaces.

  • VCIACS Rust Converter: Water-based formula that forms a conversion layer on rusted surfaces without grinding, integrating derusting and anti-rust functions. Easy to construct and eco-friendly.

  • VCI Anti-Rust Liquid (Spray Type): Quickly treats surfaces of large structures and forms a dry film after drying, without affecting adhesion of subsequent coatings.

Expected Benefits

  • Surface rust on hull sections reduced by over 80% during fabrication

  • Rust problems inside enclosed cabins solved fundamentally, reducing construction work in confined spaces

  • Galvanic corrosion risks of multi-metal components effectively lowered

  • Rust rate of outfitting parts during warehousing greatly reduced, no reprocessing required before installation

  • Corrosion of welding heat-affected zones improved
