Wind Power

Industry Background

Wind power equipment, especially offshore wind power units, operates in harsh environments with high salt spray, high humidity and drastic temperature changes, and is difficult to maintain. Key components such as gearboxes, generators and tower flanges need to meet strict anti-corrosion requirements, and usually undergo long-term storage and cross-border transportation from factory to wind farms.

Industry Challenges

1.Severe corrosion caused by offshore salt spray

Offshore wind farms are located in marine environments with high-concentration salt spray. The corrosion rate of ordinary alloy gears can reach 0.12mm per year, and traditional coating solutions cannot meet the design service life of over 20 years.

2.Extra-long storage period

It often takes several months or even more than one year for wind power equipment from factory delivery to on-site installation. Large components stored in open or semi-open yards face increased risks of protective failure due to alternating temperature and humidity.

3.Strict protection requirements for precision parts such as gearboxes

Traditional oil-based rust preventatives will interfere with cleaning and inspection before assembly of high-precision parts inside wind turbine gearboxes, and residues may affect the quality of lubricating oil.

4.Galvanic corrosion of multi-metal assemblies

Wind power equipment combines aluminum alloy, carbon steel, stainless steel and other materials. Galvanic cells form in humid and salt spray environments and accelerate corrosion of low-potential metals.

5.Rust damage of spare parts during long-term warehousing

Wind farms stock a large number of spare parts for emergency repairs, which may be stored for years. The protection effect of traditional anti-rust methods declines over time, resulting in rusted spare parts when put into use.

VCI Solution Value Proposition

We deliver long-term, salt-spray-resistant and multi-metal compatible all-round protection solutions, meeting the full life cycle demands of wind power equipment from manufacturing, transportation to spare parts warehousing.

Recommended Solutions & Product Features

  • VCI Anti-Rust Film / Bag (Tear-Resistant Reinforced Type): High-strength film material for overall packaging of heavy components such as large gearboxes and generators.

  • VCI Anti-Rust Paper / Cloth: Large-size products for covering large metal surfaces including tower flanges and bearings, easy to use for layered stacking protection.

  • VCI Anti-Rust Powder / Emitter: Continuously releases VCI vapor in sealed packages, suitable for long-term storage of precision gears and bearings with a rust protection period of over 2 years.

  • VCI Anti-Rust Liquid: Water-based spray formula for temporary protection of machined parts. No impact on subsequent assembly after drying.

Expected Benefits

  • Rust rate of offshore wind power components during transportation and storage reduced by over 90%

  • Improved reliability of long-term stored spare parts for immediate use in emergency maintenance

  • Galvanic corrosion risks of multi-metal mixed components effectively controlled
